Wednesday, April 19, 2006Tram RescueLast night the Roosevelt Island Tram broke down. Roosevelt Island sits between Queens and Manhattan in the East River. The tram was stuck over 250 feet in the air with 60+ people trapped between the two cars: Rescue efforts started at around 22:00 and did not complete until the early hours around 5:00 this morning. The evacuation of the tram cars was accomplished using an open air rescue gondola on the same cables as the stuck tram cars. The rescue gondola was operated by officers of the NYPD Emergency Services Unit: This was really quite an accomplishment... and just more evidence of the things possible when first responders arrive to "Make It Happen". Hoorah ESU!!!
